20131106_094637A great event for taking the pulse of the time, assessing the state of the art and ensuring that my contribution continues to be unique.

The events organised by the Electronics, Sensors and Photonics Knowledge Transfer Network always have particularly good delegate packs and take place in interesting venues.

Gary Bolton of the National Nuclear Laboratory showed: what needs to be measured for safe storage of nuclear waste, and I suggested I can help. I showed him my posters and he was visibly impressed. I am now working on the images of his slide.

The presenter from the Technology Strategy Board that drives innovation in the UK announced a few more significant opportunities for practising

  • fitting their templates of thinking
  • ticking their boxes of ‘fundable ideas’
  • matching expectations of assessors and other people paid to do their job – without the experience of trying to turn innovation into business.

Will Stott of the Vision & Imaging Network of the IET wants to send me images of ovarian cancer so that I can help him with their classification. Since he is a software developer, we spoke the same kind of language.

And thus I shall keep trying! When I was told that my pain is psychological and that I wouldn’t suffer in old age and was therefore denied an invalidity pension by CERN, I vowed to myself to make pain visible. My software designs can make that happen. But do TPTB (the powers that be) want it – from me, Mathematical Woman?

I know that’s the purpose of my life. That’s why my mum rescued me from the bombings of Dresden. And that’s why she said more than once to encourage me:

what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!
